Some kinda random thoughts on crowd work that I...
Look, we need audiences, and they need us. Crowd work is important for any stand-up. It’s part of the deal, and here are some things that I’ve noticed are true most of the time. Stay positive. There are always more of them than you, so they will always win a fight. Keep it fun, even if they’re being assholes.   If somebody says something really loud, acknowledge it. If you...

A Semi-Late NBA Preview
I know the season started. But I’m really busy, okay? And after seeing a few games, I think a lot of teams fall into a few categories. We already sort of know where teams will land, but the shortened season might make for some interesting changes. At the very least, a lot of teams already have an identity.  The “Going to be worse than you think” Teams - Boston Celtics, LA...

Winners / Losers of 2011
Lots of people and institutions had a blast in 2011. But, some are really looking forward to throwing out their 2011 Majestic Steeds calendar and putting up a new 2012 Glorious Horses calendar. Here is a humble blog post for those who won and lost in the two oh one one.  NFL / NBA  Both of these organizations had major labor disputes. One of them solved everything just in time, and treated their...

Here are some things that I think are true about...
1. If you blame, attack, criticize, or demean the audience or the venue, neither one will want to see you again. (Exception: if someone heckles you, go after them if you want. But if you start the trouble, go ahead and erase that place from your Google maps, because you won’t be going there again.)  2. The quality of any show, at any time, is determined by you. If you decide it’s a...

My "It's a Tour Because I Say It's a Tour" Tour
So I recently booked some pretty great shows on the road. Since all the dates are relatively close, and they’re in different cities, I’m calling it a tour. If you don’t think it counts as a tour… shut up this is important to me. Still, I’m psyched to do all these shows in different cities.  I’ll be featuring for my friend and colleague Colin Kane. You can get...

Post-hurricane Hostage Situation this Saturday
Well, last weekend was a real bummer. Not because people’s homes were flooded and people had to evacuate, but because we couldn’t do a ton of comedy shows. So to make up for it, Hostage Situation returns this week with a DOUBLE-HEADER. Take that, Irene.  As always, both these shows are very free, and they’re at The Village Lantern (167 Bleecker at Sullivan).  Oh and, check out...

spolikeluzhate: healywu: I have read this sentiment put more eloquently, but I am going to try to repackage here nonetheless because it keeps coming up in my life and I have only recently articulated it adequately in my own head. Code Red does good shows
Last night I saw the improv team Code Red for the second time. I love watching them for several reasons. First, they always book the crap out of their shows; the audience was also treated to the Cocoon Central Dance Team, BriTANick, and Doppleganger. Second, they are always trying new, Harold-based forms. And they’re really good at these new forms! Third, they’re all individually...

Hostage Situation on Saturday 8/20
Hostage Situation returns this Saturday with an intense line-up! Thanks a lot to everyone who came out last weekend. The show was really great, and luckily, we missed out on the rain that eventually sorta flooded The Village Lantern. But this Saturday, the whole block will be flooded with laughter, as we welcome:  Me!  Mark Normand Robert Dean  Emma Willmann Kase Raso  Alex Anderson  Vince...

The weirdest thing about this sad and unfortunate story is that the booster responsible admits to hiring prostitutes. Are Miami football players having trouble getting girls? If so, then they should dissolve the program.

A little life imitating art, ay, Johnny Drama?
Has anyone else seen the ads for the CBS show How to be a Gentleman? Also, can’t you just see Ari Gold reluctantly taking a meeting to get this show off the ground?  Even though I bailed on Entourage after the eighteenth consecutive episode that had the plot of Vince-bangs-model-Eric-worries-about-girlfriend, I always enjoyed Johnny Drama’s constant struggle for work. Vince was...

The goofy feminism of Weeds
I’m not really into the Showtime series Weeds, but I’ve been watching this season. And Weeds has convinced me not to watch it anymore. Spoilers ahead, if you care about that kind of thing.  I was under the impression that this show was about a woman, Nancy Botwin, who has no choice but to push drugs and kick ass. And maybe that’s what has been happening in the previous seasons....

Having fun and low-stakes improv
With DCM approaching and my indie team Sex Ghost having a great show last night, I felt compelled to write some things about improv. Grain of salt warning: I haven’t been performing that much improv lately, but I think these things could still be relevant to the 4 people that follow this blog.  Every time I’m doing an improv set and someone says, “Hey guys, let’s just all...

This week, The Nightcap Comedy Show emerges from...
Hostage Situation!  Same great comedy, same great comics, but now it’s called Hostage Situation and it’s at 9 pm every Saturday. I really like Hostage Situation as the name of the show, because I remember one of my very first sets at the Village Lantern like 4 years ago. It was a long night. We couldn’t bark in a huge audience, and the show was kind of a wash anyway, so the...

And so, it needs a new name. It’s not really a nightcap anymore, unless you’re my Dad and you have a beer to fall asleep at 9 pm on a Saturday. It’ll run from 9 pm to about 10:30, every Saturday, and it will continue to be a great stand-up comedy show. I mean, just look at all this fun!  Here’s me, probably recovering from something weird.     So, a new name. I...

Professional headcases and the Pats
A pretty good rule for professional sports teams is that you can pick up a headcase on your team… as long as you don’t give them another headcase to hang out with. So with the Pats picking up Albert Haynesworth AND Chad Ochocinco, I’m a little worried. I’m a little worried that before the season starts, we’ll see the headline in the Globe: Haynesworth and Ochocinco...

The optimistic heckler
Last night I did a quick set to a house filled to the brim with 5 people. It wasn’t great.  But it was pretty good. I just wanted to try out some new stuff, so in that sense, mission accomplished. But somewhere into my first bit, I delivered what I thought was a punch line, and it got zero laughs. Less than zero laughs. It sucked the air out of the room. But right away, someone in the back...

Lately, I’ve been bombarded by two different types of ads for the movie The Change-Up. Both of them are equally horrifying.  The first ad is the one we’re all used to seeing, at least in the NYC subways. It’s of Hollywood beefcake Ryan Reynolds holding up two young, attractive women while Hollywood person Jason Bateman is holding up two babies. Because, guys, you know...
